When I was young a question that used to perturb me was that if Japan a small country can win a number of Olympic medals then why can't India?
Today at a more mature age I can understand that Japan has the infrastructure ,financial abilty and required human resource to earn Olympic medals. However India got a Olympic hero in Abhinav Bindra when he won a gold medal( first individual gold medal by an Indian) in the 2008 Olympics.
Among other sports persons the names of Vishwanathan Anand(chess),Saina Nehwal(badminton),Vijender Singh (boxing) and Shushil Kumar (Wrestling) are prominant.
Indian sports has been largely dominated by cricket and after thee1983 World Cup victory it became a household game. Hockey which was India's only other Olympic medal winner has now taken a backstage. It is often alleged that Inidan people lack the killer instinct to shine in the bigstage. India has antoher two heros in Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupati(tennies).Indian football that was once of Asian standard is now pushed back in ranking below 100.However India has attained some names in sports administratiion but the recent Commonwealth Games organisation wasn't foolproof.
All said and done the Indian sports must come out from the galmour and pomp of cricket as it overshadows all the other games. Moreover of late cricket, thanks to the IPL has become a show business and is no more mere game. I f red tapism and neptism can be avoided then only Indian sports can be of world standerdj and there is nothing wrong in hoping that it is not far left before sports in India can be of world standard.
